Empathy is an interesting thing, isn’t it?
It sounds like a simple concept. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Imagine what the other person’s world is like, and how that might impact their decisions and behaviour.
Then adjust your response accordingly.
(This, by the way, is my definition – I am sure there are better ones out there).

The thing about empathy is that I think it’s easier to be empathetic when you can relate to the other person’s experience of the world. You may have had the same experiences – upbringing, trauma, setbacks, heartbreaks and the like….
Where it does get challenging, and possibly where it’s even more important to exercise curiosity, is where you haven’t had the same experience. [click to continue…]

I don’t know about you, but I grew up in a world where praise was limited.
We were all so hard on ourselves, and by extension had the same high expectations of each other.
So with this negativity and criticism all around it was a tough place to thrive – because without even knowing it, I never felt good enough. And neither did my friends.
But what I do remember from these times, however, is how good I felt when I saw what other people were able to do despite setbacks. Or I saw how they were succeeding and thought I could do that too.

True confessions.
I love lockdown clothes.
My time has come.
For a few years when I first started my business, I used to work in my pyjamas until about midday.
Now my usual zoom outfit consists of a nice top and yoga pants with hiking boots. That way I can make a quick getaway if I need some fresh air with a walk around the block.
This is me and has always been me – much to the eye-rolling of my more stylish friends.
If given the choice between the newsreader outfit and full corporate rig – I’d do newsreader every day.
However I do recognize the importance of visuals and “corporate uniform”, so to speak.
The first reason being is that we are such visual people, and if we as interviewers see you looking the part we can imagine you in the part and don’t need to constantly make a cognitive leap to think of you in the part.

Wondering what skills you should develop for the future – where work will be more casualised and were we’re heading towards portfolio careers?
It’s a big question because we’re not talking things like coding or technical skills you can acquire by training.
Well, wonder no more.

I find people fascinating.
For some people security is in having steady pay from an employer.
And for others, relying on someone else to bring in the bikkies is the least secure thing on the planet.
If steady pay is your thing, I challenge you to join us on #CareerCarePackage tomorrow.
