We’re delighted to present Russell on #CareerCarePackage.

No not Russell Brand, nor Russell Crowe, someone much much better – Russell Johnson.

Russell is one of the pioneers in the careers industry, a wisdom-filled veteran.

He’s the Founder and Managing Director of EPR and now Russell Johson and Associates – an organisation partnering exclusively with executives and professionals helping them navigate career-limiting situations and achieve their full career potential.

Russell has a fascinating career story of his own.

Early in his career he was a Minister of Religion – and left

In the decade following he became a senior executive with a Fortune 500 group company in the US – and left

Wanting a meaningful new challenge, when he could not find appropriate career support, he spent several years researching areas of interest and eventually launched Australia’s first career firm dedicated to serving executives and professionals.

Enter EPR, followed by Russell Johnson and Associates.

So we’re talking to him on:

  • How do you know you’re not on the right career path
  • How to choose the right career path
  • How to develop a career strategy, and plan your career
  • The importance of goal setting as part of your career
  • The lessons he has learned in his own life and from supporting countless others
  • How to best create a career in the volatile and uncertain Covid-19 world, we’re now facing
  • His top tips for finding meaningful employment

As always this will be a great discussion, so don’t miss it.

Hey ho, off we go.

We’re tackling resume renovations and rescues with some real-life examples of what has worked and not worked for our clients.

2020 is different.

So our advice around the format, template, length and presentation for a resume is different.

Why?

Because you are competing with hundreds more people than you were in 2019 for the same position.

So how do you make your resume stand out?

In this episode we’re covering the following:

  • What makes a great resume in 2020 – is it different from 2019?
  • How to make your resume stand out?
  • Should you have different resumes for different purposes – say one for networking, one for applying?
  • How long should a resume really be?
  • Tear down/break down of resumes that have actually worked

The recession Australia had to have in the early 1990’s, the Dot Com bubble and bust, 9/11, the GFC and now the glorious mess that is Covid-19 – I am sure I’ve missed a few other economic slaps and whacks that have happened during the period The Australian Turntable Company has been in operation.

That’s why we’re delighted to bring Co-Founder Paul Chapman onto Career Care Package and shine the spotlight on his experience.

This is a small business based in the Victorian town of Bendigo.

They’ve not only survived what the world has tossed at them, but thrived.

That’s a bl**dy good question isn’t it, and one we are digging into on Career Care Package.

Many people use the language “losing my identity” when they talk about job loss.

But honestly, I think the range of emotions people experience are a whole lot more tumultuous than just wondering what it is that you should call yourself now if you are out looking for work.

So we do need to talk on this….

So I’m not sure if languaging is a verb or not, but what I do know is that we don’t have great ways to describe our feelings.

We say “I’m anxious.”

We say “I’m sad.”

We say “I feel depressed.”

And then typically we leave it for the other person to understand exactly what that means.

And often because we’re not that great at dealing with other’s emotional discomfort (or perhaps we’re too self-focused) that’s where the conversation ends.

Why am I mentioning this?

Well, without a fuller description – we’re missing a great opportunity for others to connect with what we’re feeling – be able to better understand that feeling, and help us if they can.

From a job search perspective, this means we miss the opportunity to build a better support network.

So to give you an example here’s how it works for me.

Instead of saying “I feel anxious” I could say:

“I lie awake at night with the same thought spinning around in my head. It’s like a broken record. I try to understand why I feel so crap. I work out solution after solution after solution. Then when I try to go to sleep I wake up 30 minutes after, rinse and repeat.”

I’d suggest it becomes pretty clear what’s going on after that. [click to continue…]
