That’s a bl**dy good question isn’t it, and one we are digging into on Career Care Package.
Many people use the language “losing my identity” when they talk about job loss.
But honestly, I think the range of emotions people experience are a whole lot more tumultuous than just wondering what it is that you should call yourself now if you are out looking for work.
So we do need to talk on this….
When I was researching an article around outplacement many years ago, I heard some career counselors tell stories of men who had lost their job, but dressed up every day to go into their office.
They pretended to go to work because they were too ashamed to talk about what happened.
For me when I was wanting to leave my corporate role, I felt stuck.
I did not know what I wanted to do next. I knew I wanted to go, but I had lost so much confidence I did not think I was worthy of being hired again.
In the first example, you could say those men associate so strongly with their job – for example, “you think you are only worthy if you have your job title.”
Or for me “you don’t know the right job for you.”
You could call both these questions – questions of identity.
But regardless of terminology, I think it will be immensely useful to discuss in detail, the range of emotions you could feel when you lose your job and explore some helpful strategies so you can make some moves forward.
