We all know how powerful and transformative these breaks can be.
Remember Laura Waters who took the trek from one end of NZ to the other.
She was suffering from anxiety and burn out.
So she took the 5-month journey and came out stress-free and with a totally new career as a travel writer.
Have you had a break that’s transformed your life?
I know I have when I left the corporate world and spent a lot of time volunteering. I did this as I was drawn to do work where I believed I could make a difference – and I ended up working with asylum seekers helping them navigate our immigration system.
I worked with lawyers, advocates, volunteers, nuns and business owners along the way.
From that process, I recognized I had the ability to step up into the complete unknown – where future lives were at stake.
Sometimes I think if we plan our change in a very prescriptive and linear way, it will never happen.
Fear kicks in and manifests itself in many different ways.
For me, taking a sabbatical is a way we can trick our brains into believing we’re not making a life-changing decision when we really are. So we end up doing the thing that serves us best.
