If you’re looking for a job, I need to warn you about this phenomena as it’s happened to me, and many of my clients.
It’s called “aim too low.”
Other coaches call this a process of “self limiting beliefs.”
The dispiriting thing about this phenomena is that if you’re like me – you don’t even know you’re doing it.
I’ll explain what happened to me because this is what I was doing.
And you if you see some of yourself in this story don’t stress. I have a way forward for you at the bottom of this post.

Truthfully now.
Have you copied your resume directly into LinkedIn and secretly hoped that’s all it took to get a tap on the shoulder by a headhunter?
Or have you looked at what other people in similar positions have written and copied the bits that sounded impressive across to your own profile?
Maybe you’ve had something up there untouched for years now, because the thought of writing about yourself makes you cringe a little.
If it helps you to know this, that’s what many people do – so no need to be too embarrassed!
The bad news is that these type of shenanigans won’t do too much to help you get hired.
So I have developed a quick research-backed quiz based (based on LinkedIn’s own research and big data), so you can learn a few things about what’s been proven to make a difference to whether a recruiter will:
a) find your profile
b) click on your profile
c) want to talk to you
d) call you about a job
Well, let’s remove all the guess work and start with finding out what LinkedIn’s own research and what big data research says about how to attract the right sort of attention.
I’ve developed a quick quiz with research backed data to help you make some easy fixes to get you started on the right footing.
Take the test below and I’ll send you some answers to help you make some tweaks to help you get hired faster
That’s the end of my rant for now.

Read any guide to writing the perfect cover letter or resume and 10 out of 10 times you’ll hear this advice.
Use bold action words.
People want to know what you’ve contributed, not what just what you’ve done. Infuse it with your achievements.
“Make sure you’ve got key words.”
Keep it short. If you can’t say it on a page, you’re talking too much.
YOU ONLY HAVE 10 SECONDS TO GRAB THE RECRUITER’S ATTENTION.
(I’ve put that in caps because you hear this piece of advice so often it feels like it’s being shouted.)

Now all this advice is fine.
But there is a big piece that’s missing from this, and it’s something that makes all the difference in any written communication you might fire off to an employer.
It’s the piece that gets you a yes. [click to continue…]

So I launched my first Straight to Shortlist Challenge in January this year.
I took a group of inspiring and talented professionals through the process of securing 5 meetings with 5 employers in 5 weeks.
Yip, yip, yipeee!!
(Calm down KB. You’re supposed to be professional on this blog. Serious people read it.)
As you can see I am super excited to be delivering a program I believe will help people cross a major job search hurdle – and one so many people struggle with.
I know I’ve been talking about the power of creating your own opportunities for many years.
Now I have developed a challenge to take people from being confused about how to network to create jobs, to stepping confidently out to organise meetings with people who have the power to supercharge their job search by 10 X plus.
As I was writing my challenge training materials, I had a massive “ah ha” moment.

I realised one of the reasons I have been so excited about delivering this challenge is that I have created many opportunities for myself in so many different ways.
Not only that – I have done this without being an out and proud extrovert.
I have done this when I have felt like I did not have that much to offer at the time.
And I have flubbed more than a few meetings when I have walked away thinking arrrrrgh – why did I say that???
However the thing I have found through this, is that people have given me big brownie points for sincerely trying.

You know how there are things you do every day for work yet there are plenty of things you do every day for fun?
Sometimes you think, wouldn’t it be great to combine the two?
There’s actually good reason to want to.
Psychological research says if you find a job that’s aligned to your strengths, you’ll be more productive. You’ll be promoted more often, and you’ll earn more money.
